A Curation of 90’s music
The ’90s were such a fun time. We lived without Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Mobile phones. Music those days touched not only our hearts but our souls as well.
We curated a list of some awesome 90’s music videos which topped the MTV charts and they were so catchy we would love to by-heart their lyrics and watch the full music videos just to see the story unfolding and some of them would have a better storyline than most of the movies.
1. Gud Naal Ishq Mitha
The song that introduced us to Jas Arora’s mischievous smile, Malaika Arora’s sartorial elegance (those red heels!), and of course, our favourite dance step, Gud Naal Ishq Mitha is a memorable track with the story of a young man, using his sister’s wedding to introduce his partner to his parents, is also so cute.
2. Piya Basanti Re
Sung by Ustad Sultan Khan and K.S Chitra, it was one of the most popular songs on Radio, though it sounds like a folk song, the music is as mesmerizing as the video location.
3. Jaanam Samjha Karo
You would love to see Asha Bhosle not only sing the song but also appearing as a Fairy Godmother. The video stars Milind Soman and Helen Brodie – Who accidentally meet in a music store and fall in love.
4. Gori Teri Aankhein Kahein
Released in 2001, the album immediately was on top of the charts. Lucky Ali and Kavita Krishnamurthy’s voice perfectly accompanied the hauntingly beautiful story of this song. The story tells about the hollowness of a young spouse then presented with a situation to deal with the grief of her husband’s untimely death.
5. Meri Chunar Udd Udd Jaaye
Ayesha takia looks like a baby doll, with simple makeup. Mostly 90s kids will understand the beauty of this song and it was long before Ayesha Takia even debuted in any movie. The song was sung by Phalguni Pathak.
6. Chudi (Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi)
Falguni Pathak in the ’90s had given some awesome songs, and one of these is chudi song, the steps of the songs had become very popular among the 90’s kids. The actors were young and their looks fresh reminded us of school romance and of course the colony’s famous dandiya raas, where we all are so excited go just to get the glimpse of your crush. The video is truly based on that experience.
7. Chandni Raatein
Aha! The pain of that first heartbreak when the “old monk” was not that popular alternative. ??- when in college and these song(s) we associate ourselves with. Like Chandni Raatein, where the protagonist is left pondering where his love interest vanished to. To date, we wonder what exactly was written in that letter that he read – and who was the mystery person for whom Reema Sen left him.
8. Piya Basanti Re – Surmayi Aankhein
There are some stories that are so captivating that cannot be completed with just one song and this is one of those songs which needed its other side to get completed. Like Piya Basanti Re, its sequel Surmayi Aankhein. The video begins with the protagonist going down memory lane to his forbidden love story, where he and his partner are on the run. Sung by Ustad Sultan Khan and K.S Chitra.
9. Aaja Piya Tohe Pyaar Dun – Meri Soni Meri Tamanna (Remixes)
This one very old song remixed to the right proportion and recreated the nostalgia of the original song. While we’ll always choose originals over remix, this was one of the rare occasions where a remix got it right. Shyla Lopez’s graceful moves were just the right mix for this sensuality that showed a young woman’s adorably clumsy attempts to get ready for her partner.
10. Leja Leja Re
The album Ustad & the Divas was launched with this melodious number. But the video was equally charming, where a dancer–frustrated with her job–expresses her emotions by drawing on a bus stop. Only to find her drawings ‘improved upon’ by a random stranger. Adorable does not even begin to describe it!
11. Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein (Remix)
The original song features Rajesh Khanna and Zeenat Aman from the movie Ajnabee. This is another Remix in the ’90s which topped the charts. Strangers in Rainy Night meeting still works as a good story in Bollywood, While Niketan Madhok and Anupama Verma’s sizzling chemistry had us easily falling for this story when the video came out. But I always wonder, where they got that round ice from or was it a marble ?. Clearly, the directors of the video did get this right!
12. Maine Payal Hai Chhankai
Was there any Falguni Pathak song that wasn’t almost a hit in the ’90s and accompanied by a warm and fun video? I am sure there won’t be one. The song featured Vivek Bhatena and the story of the college’s annual day which keep us hooked us with the full video.
13. Deewana Tera
Sonu Nigam was the wonderboy of 90s songs. And Deewana Tera is easily one of his more popular pop songs – partly because of the engrossing story. Is the video – of a man whose partner strays too far into the sea – airlifted, we sat engrossed, waiting to see how the story unfolds.
14. Ab Ke Saawan Aise Barse
Shubha Mudgal’s powerful and the music vocals had the perfect accompaniment in this fun-filled video of a community coming together to celebrate the monsoons. This song comes as a fusion of hip-hop with contemporary music. Many short stories were beautifully combined in this video to present the natural abandonment of enjoying rains.
15. Ghar Aaja Soniya
Okay, chances are you remember this song for presenting three of our childhood crushes – Sharbani Mukherjee, Samir Soni, and Arjan Bajwa. But this music video presented a story of a deaf and mute woman whose husband divorces her. As she is left distraught, her friend helps her explore other avenues and develop her identity.
16. Jab Saamne Tum Aa Jate Ho
Veteran singers Jagjit Singh, Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar sang together for this full-fledged drama converted to a music video. Riya Sen playing as twins, Riya Sen falls for her childhood best friend, only to find him falling for her Riya Sen again(of course her twin sister) ;-). The story is simple and clearly a triangular love story. I was finally glad to see Riya Sen meeting with the hero. ’90s was such a time for all this.
17. Aur Aahista Kijiye Baatein
If there is any list of songs that had touched your heart deeply, this song surely has to be on that list. This is how Pankaj Udhas creates the story with his voice and music. The story is based on O. Henry’s famous story, The Gift of the Magi, the music video tries to recreate this story in the modern-era which felt honest, pure, and heartwarming – all at the same time. A couple fell in love and try to find the perfect gift for each other – and end up sacrificing something close to themselves. I believe this was also the debut song of Sameera Reddy. Her looks, so innocent.?
18. Aankhon Mein Tera Hi Chehra
Shahid Kapoor is the young kid in the video. We all guessed it right correct!! Now he is one of the film industry’s leading stars, almost all of us know him now and must have tried to find again this old video starring him, at least once. Then, when it first came on MTV, shown as a young boy’s and his impassioned efforts to buy the perfect gift for his crush had us all crushing, hard, on his youthful exuberance on display.
19. Ab Mujhe Raat Din
Another beautiful song by Sonu Nigam. Reminds me of college days when without Facebook, Twitterati, the mobile phone you watch the song mesmerized on the TV, listening to each of the words in the lyrics, remembering the expression of the actors and visualizing yourself performing the exact dance steps with your crush. Thinking someday you will buy a guitar and learn to play it. Well for me that day still has to come. ??
20. Tera Mera Pyaar
Then there are times when nothing is right and then we hear this on our TV’s, Kumar Sanu gifting us this sweet romantic number – with an equally charming video. Nimrat Kaur stars as the young girl, who finds love in a movie theater, and our naive, teenage selves added one more reason to hit the movie halls!
21. Maeri
Palash Sen and his band Euphoria were famous for giving good songs with a good story Maeri is among their best compilations. The story of Palash Sen taking us through his love story – tinged with family drama, forced separation, and wonderful beats. And even today, this brings us the sweet memory of falling in love once again.
22. Kabhi Aana Tu Meri Gali
Of course, starring Palash Sen and Vidya Balan, When Vidya Balan almost married someone against her wishes – only to have an unfair dowry demand and Palash Sen ‘save her’. Watch the video to see how finally they end up with each other. Where are you Palash, bring the magic back.
23. Purani Jeans
This was, is, and will probably always be the number that guarantees a trip down memory lane. And just like the lyrics, every scene in the video was a reminder of the pranks, romances, and mistakes that made our childhood.
24. Woh pehli baar
This is a song from the movie Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi is sung by Shaan is one of the ultimate classics that’ll never get old with mere years passing by. Enjoy this Bollywood love song from Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi and feel the love with Dino Morea and Rinke Khanna. Bring the joy of the carefree school days.
25. Ab Na Jaa
Another beautiful song about reunions from the Euphoria Band, Starring, of course, Palash Sen ?. Reunions can be a bittersweet experience, or a chance to look back at unfulfilled promises and turn them true. This simple video was an ode to the latter.
26. Khoya Khoya Chand
Looking back at these videos, it’s evident that most of us really did grow up on a steady diet of forbidden love stories and desi ‘prince charming’. Nevertheless, this video – which starred Dia Mirza as a young woman who has to give up on her love – did worm its way into our hearts.
27. Ho Gai Hai Mohabbat
We feel great watching the mischievous antics the ‘hero’ pulls in this video. This video was also shot in Kerala and beautifully present the scenic beauty of the place.
28. Tera Chehra
If you are a fan of Ghazals, this one is another very romantic ghazal from Jagjit Singh. The voice feels so fresh you feel that you just heard it yesterday.
Not all songs have great stories, but then again we mostly didn’t care. This is a list of some of the awesome songs of the ’90s.
Feel free to listen to them at your leisure.
We have created this Playlist for you.
