KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is upset with those who have thrown rubbish indiscriminately outside of shops and along the main road of Little India in Brickfields.Pictures posted on its Facebook page yesterday showed discarded boxes of wilted flowers, plastic, newspapers and sugarcane strewn along the main road facing shops and in front of the Palava pillars.
The local authority wrote a message on its social media page saying that this type of mentality should change.
“The city is celebrating its 50th anniversary, so its citizens’ maturity should also reflect that age.
“As a responsible local authority, we will do our best to keep the city clean, even though our efforts could have been utilised elsewhere.
“We are disappointed.
“There should be proper planning on rubbish disposal by shopowners,” said a DBKL spokesperson from the corporate communications unit.
Based on the items thrown out, they believed that traders and those who bought items for the Ponggal celebration, which began yesterday, were responsible for the mess.
Ponggal is celebrated all over the world to mark the auspicious month of Thai in the Tamil calendar.
Tamils celebrate the festival by boiling a pot of fresh milk to make sweet rice.
The spokesperson said the traders should have anticipated the possibility of extra rubbish since this was a yearly celebration.
“We hope that the shopowners here will be more responsible with rubbish disposal management in the future,” he added.
Alam Flora workers were deployed at 8am to clean up the area.
“There was a lot of paper, plastic and sugarcane.
“We are going to have a tough time sorting out the organic waste from the non-organic waste,” a worker, who declined to be named, told StarMetro.
“Every year the rubbish piles up.
“One would expect that they would have come up with a proper rubbish (management) system by now,” the worker added.
Brickfields Rukun Tetangga chairman SKK Naidu was also disappointed that such a thing continued occurring each year.
“We will try and create some awareness and educate the shopowners,’’ he said.
