Palava Kalyan-Shil Mahape Road: As a solution to the traffic congestion towards Palava City and Dombivali, Traffic division has decided that heavy vehicles will be barred for 30 days on a pilot basis on the Shilphata-Mahape route. This decision will be implemented after the Ganeshotsav.
Heavy traffic will only continue on this route from Taloja-Shilphata and will be open for traffic between 12 PM to 4 PM and from 11 PM to 5 AM. This will help in relieving the jams along the Mahape and Shil-phata route, this sees a lot of congestion, due to the major premium housing project of Palava City.
Heavy traffic flows daily from shil-phata route towards Mumbai, Nashik, Gujarat and JNPT ports and the number of these vehicles is huge. Apart from this, a large number of houses have been erected in the area of shil-phata and this area has been largely urbanized.
Good News for Palavians
This is some really good news for Palavians as from the last few years people residing at Palava City and the areas around Palava are seeing a lot of congestion along this route and residents have to struggle a lot to reach their destination. At present, there is no other solution for the residents of Palava except Road. Train frequency is also not very good. Please read our detailed blog on using train commute from Palava to Mumbai.
Besides, due to an increase in residents moving into Palava City and other constructions along the route, so an increase in vehicles is clearly visible along the route.

Most of the residents residing here are employed in Navi Mumbai and Mumbai area and they travel by road to work. Similarly, citizens of Kalyan-Dombivali area travel by this route. Traffic from this route is constantly heavy.

Heavy vehicles heading towards JNPT via Mumbra External Transport take a turn from the shil-phata intersection and pass the highway and traffic flows through the Mumbra port through JNPT port and because of this traffic at Shil-phata and Kalyan-phata Chowk is regularly halted due to this. On the Kalyan and Mahape route, there were huge vehicle queues along the lines of traffic.
Daily Travel Routine
Early mornings and evenings are the worst time for this traffic for people residing in Palava and nearby areas and a lot of people daily spend around 2-4 hours stranded along the route.

The bureaucracy is also frustrated by this regular routine. The problem was raised in this area through the ‘Lokasatha’ traffic congestion series. Taking notice of this, a notification has been issued by Amit Kale, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Thane Traffic Branch, to solve the problem.
To avoid getting stuck in these regular traffic residents living in Palava City have already started carpooling.
Senior police inspector of the Mumbra Traffic Bureau Suresh Lambhate said banning heavy traffic on the Mahape route would help relieve traffic congestion. Apart from this, there will be relief from the dams in Mumbra, Kalyan and Silaphata Chowk. These changes will be implemented after the Ganeshotsav and for this, a panel will be put in place for the traffic change.
What are the changes?
‘Now, like Thane and Ghodbandar, heavy vehicles are being accessed in Shil-phata area from 12 PM to 4 PM and from 11 PM to 5 AM.
‘However, access to heavy traffic through shil-phata Mahape will be restricted. ‘Heavy traffic arriving via Mumbra Exit will be discharged between Shil-phatata – Kalyan-phata-Dahisar Mori-Taloja between 12 PM to 4 PM and from 11 PM to 5 AM.
