Nagpur: Maharashtra, the first state to appoint a Lokayukta in 1972, has finally brought the chief minister under the ambit of the state’s anti-corruption authority with the passing of the Lokayukta Bill 2022 in the winter session of the legislature.
The Maharashtra Lokayukta Bill, 2022, which replaces the old law, Lokayukta & Uplokayukta Act, 1971, was passed by the legislative council.Last year, it was passed in the state assembly but referred to a joint committee for modifications.
As per the Bill, the Lokayukta will have to seek approval of the Vidhan Sabha before initiating an inquiry against the CM, which would require bringing a motion in the House and passed by not less than two-thirds of members.
