According to a Hindustan Times report, this new city is proposed to be built around the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which will be connected to Mumbai by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL).
According to sources in the state government, the proposal received the go-ahead last week.
The directive for altering the remote areas of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), for which the New Town Development Authority (NTDA) was established, is probably going to be sent to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). This new body will include portions of Ulwe, Pen, Panvel, Uran, Karjat, and the surrounding areas within a 323 square km.
Furthermore, it is anticipated that about 200 villages—including 80–90 villages under the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA)—will be included in the NTDA.
“We are calling it the Third Mumbai which will have all the necessary infrastructure that a well-developed city should have. It will have everything from residential — both luxury and affordable — commercial complexes, data centres, large knowledge parks, and financial companies. A robust public transportation shall also be developed there,” a government official was quoted as saying by HT.
It has been suggested that the new city will increase economic activity and raise the country’s GDP. “There is a plan to develop a second BKC in Kharghar. Around 150 hectares of land is expected to be available for developing it into a purely commercial area that would attract both Indian companies and MNCs,” the official added.
