CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: Quota activist Manoj Jarange ended his indefinite fast on Thursday, the ninth day of his agitation, but warned of a bigger protest if the government did not take any action by January 2 next year on providing reservation to the Maratha community.
CM Eknath Shinde, meanwhile, said the government had conceded Jarange’s demand to provide Kunbi (OBC) caste certificates to Marathas from across the state who have documents attesting to Kunbi antecedents.Till now, the government had agreed to this only for Marathwada region. Jarange wants Kunbi certificates for all Marathas across the state.
Jarange called off the agitation after state ministers Uday Sawant, Dhananjay Munde, Sandipan Bhumare and Atul Save, reached out to him.
The activist’s announcement came as a relief for the state government, which was grappling with the issue after failing to fulfil the demand for Maratha reservation in the mutually agreed 40-day period.
Shinde said he had spoken to Jarange on Tuesday and then MLA Bachchu Kadu went to persuade him on Wednesday. By Thursday afternoon, the delegation, including retired judges M G Gaikwad and Sunil Shukre, advocate Himanshu Sachdev and the four ministers went to Jalna to persuade the activist to call off his strike. “It’s the first time that legal experts have visited a protest site,” CM Shinde said.
