Kalyan 19 October:
Kalyan … a city with a rich historical heritage. Over the course of time, many memories of the history of today’s place have been erased and here the ‘Tanga occupation’, which is more than 100 years old, is currently facing the final days due to the corona.
Corona and the resulting lockdown have devastated businesses from small to large. Due to which Kalyan’s ‘tanga business’ was heavily impacted. ‘Tangas’ has special identity of old Kalyan. But due to Corona, the business is currently in its final stages. The business, which has been closed since March, has not started yet. As a result, horsemen and their horses are literally starving.
Kalyan had about 114 registered legs before the lockout. Kalyan’s railway station is the main source of income for the tanga walas.
However, in the recent times this number has been halved as local travel is not yet open to the public and the tanga business has not yet been granted permission to operate. Many horse riders have sold their horses because they cannot afford to feed them. Even after 6 months, the general public still sees no sign of starting of the local businesses. Good income from weddings and other religious ceremonies is off the limits due to this pandemic.
This tanga business, known for its historical well-being, is on the verge of extinction today. Efforts should be made to save them by the government as well as locals. Only then can this 100 year old business can survive. .
