Mumbai: CM Eknath Shinde has stepped up to control pollution in the state and directed that measures to improve the air quality index should be implemented on action mode, while directing that all administrative agencies should work together in a campaign towards a pollution-free Maharashtra.
A special team should be appointed to deploy 1000 tankers to spray water to curb the dust on the roads in Mumbai. Construction sites of MMRD should be dust free and clean. The CM told the BMC Commissioner to increase the use of anti-smog guns and sprinklers.
Pollution free Campaign should be a people’s movement
CM Eknath Shinde said on this occasion, various systems of the Municipal Corporation as well as the State Government should act together to effectively implement the measures taken to improve the air quality in the cities including Mumbai. The CM said that a public movement should be created by involving citizens in the campaign to prevent pollution.
Spray water to prevent spreading dust
CM directed that the roads should be cleaned by spraying water to prevent the spread of dust due to the ongoing constructions and development projects at various places in Mumbai and the appointment of special teams to clean the accumulated dust. He also said that the number of tankers should be increased to 1000 for washing the roads. While putting iron sheets to stop dust at the construction sites where development works are going on through MMRDA in the metropolitan area including Mumbai, the CM directed to make all these places dust free. The Chief Minister also asked the Metropolitan Commissioners to ensure that citizens are not disturbed while passing through the roads due to the iron sheets placed at the workplaces.
Sand, debris should be covered while carrying it
The CM said that all municipalities and cities should strictly follow the orders and guidelines given by the Bombay High Court to control the most polluted places in the city. At this time, the CM suggested that the transport department should act against the vehicles that do not cover the dirt and debris from the roads while transporting them.
Increase Urban Forest
Municipalities should take the initiative to increase urban forest area in the metros of the state. Tree plantation should be done. Use sprinklers to reduce dust. Air pollution measures need to be controlled. At this time, the CM directed to experiment with cloud seeding to reduce dust pollution in Mumbai.
Submit weekly review of pollution control measures
The CM also gave instructions to submit weekly review of pollution control measures in the state. During the meet, the experts of IIT gave information about the measures to be taken to reduce the pollution. These experts called for Maharashtra to take the initiative to study the effects of pollution on health.
All Divisional Commissioners, Collectors, Municipal Commissioners, Superintendent of Police, Chief Executive Officer participated in this meeting held at Varsha residence through video conference. On this occasion, BMC Commissioner I. S. Chahal, Additional Chief Secretary of Public Works Department Manisha Mhaiskar, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA Sanjay Mukherjee, Principal Secretary of Environment Department Pravin Darade, Principal Secretary of Urban Development Department Govindaraj, Chief Executive Officer of MIDC Vipin Sharma, Principal Secretary of Transport Department Parag Jain, etc were present on this occasion.
