THERE was another step to normality as many of Carlisle’s bars, barbers and hairdressers opened for the first time since the start of the lockdown.
Queues of people were reported waiting outside shops this morning for a post lockdown hairdo, or short back and sides – as they unlocked their doors for the first time since March.
Businesses were reporting steady trade with people heeding Government advice and maintaining the social distancing rules.
Each shop has put in place a number of measures to ensure regulations are kept.
Stylists at Boyd Hair and Beauty, based on Bank Street, for example are working with PPE, together with other measures.
Jenny Richardson, receptionist and manager, said: “It is fantastic and great to see the customers return.
“I would say that trade has been easy going, nice and chilled.”
She added that they are booked up for at least another four weeks.
It’s also first day back for Chloe Mcclurg, a beauty therapist – whose section in the shop is still not open because of Government regulations.
She said: “I think it has gone really well, as we say we are not fully open but I’m here with everyone else, to help out.”
At lunchtime manager of the Botchergate’s BrewDog bar, Lynn Candlish, said people were adhering to Government advice and being sensible.
She added: “I think it has run very smoothly, very sensible – we’re just pleased that they are back again.”
Chris Hart, manager of The Cranemakers pub, on London Road, said: “It has not been so bad, had a few people in, people following the rules, no palava – so far they have got the gist of what they need to do, no complaints.”
However a number of bars in the city have not opened.
For example, The Sportsmans Inn, has said in a sign in the pub window that it won’t open until August 1.
And Bar Solo, on Botchergate, won’t open to July 16.
