The incident came to light after the victim lodged a complaint on Thursday. The man alleged that the two accused convinced him that they have found a pot full of gold coins in Goa and are selling them at a cheap price.
The complainant was lured by the offer and paid the accused Rs 1.05 crore in multiple installments between March 2022 and July 2023, however, no gold was provided to him.
A case was registered under unidentified accused under Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and further investigation in the case is underway.
In a similar incident, a 32-year-old software engineer from Pune was duped of Rs 20.8 lakh in an online gold trading scam.
The victim alleged in his complaint that in July he was added to a mobile messenger group for online trading. The admin of the group claimed to be a gold investment analyst and said would help the group members in trading. As days passed, other group members started sharing screenshots of the profits they made and the victim was lured to invest.
“The techie first invested Rs 11,000 and earned Rs 11,161. He then made some more investments and earned Rs 50,000,” TOI reported quoting an official.
