MUMBAI: Maharashtra reported two Covid deaths on Wednesday, one each from Pune and Sangli, marking the first confirmed fatalities in over 3 months. The state also witnessed a surge in new cases, with 87 infections recorded on Wednesday, more than double the count from Tuesday (37).
Asking people to take general precautions, Dheeraj Kumar, commissioner of National Health Mission, confirmed both fatalities were elderly individuals (aged 75 and 81) with underlying health conditions.The state is awaiting the JN1 variant report to determine if the emerging Omicron variant played a role in their infections and death. The state had reported last confirmed deaths in September from Thane district. Since January this year, 136 Covid deaths have been recorded in the state, with over 71% of individuals above 60 years old. As per the state report, Pune circle reported the most (39) new cases on Wednesday, followed by MMR (36). Within MMR, Mumbai registered 19 new cases but no hospitalisations.
The weekly report for new cases shows a surge in Maharashtra. From December 14 to 20, the state recorded 46 cases, a figure that rose almost six-fold to 267 between December 21 and 27. Kumar said people must follow general and usual precautions such as wearing a mask, avoiding crowded places, and maintaining personal hygiene. He added people should take the advice of a doctor whenever symptoms are present. State officials said the number of tests has increased substantially compared to the previous few weeks.
