Panaji: Despite assurances, there seems to be no end to the woes of the people in Porvorim, and surrounding areas, due to water shortage.
They may have to suffer for a few more days as pumping of water from the Tillari dam in Maharashtra to Goa is likely to be delayed by another two days with repair work on the main gate of dam yet to be completed.
If water is released by Wednesday, then Bardez, particularly Porvorim and Saligao, may receive supply by Friday or Saturday, said executive engineer of the water resources department (WRD) Milind Gaude.
Areas of Porvorim and Saligao constituencies have been badly affected by water shortage since November 27 as maintenance work of the Tillari canal was taken up. The supply of water from Tillari through the two canals was stopped.
The residents of Porvorim, Verem, Reis Magos and other parts of the Bardez taluka have been receiving irregular water supply for the past three weeks.
Christmas and also Datta jayanti, for many residents, were without water supply.
Though maintenance work on the Tillari canal was completed on December 22, a technical fault at the main gate of the dam on the Maharashtra side has delayed the release of water to the Goa side.
Gaude said the executive engineer of the Maharashtra WRD said that the technical issue will be resolved by late Wednesday evening.
When the maintenance work of Tillari canal was taken up, the PWD made arrangements to provide water to North Goa from Anjunem and Assonora. However, with the Porvorim water treatment plant being shut down, many villages in Porvorim and Saligao have been badly affected.
“Christmas went dry without water. Was hoping that I will get water atleast on Shri Datta jayanti. But alas it’s 12 past 9 and not a drop of water,” said an angry resident of Porvorim, near Pundalik Nagar, praying “Datta Maharaj. Please forgive Them”!!!
