CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: Six workers died in a major fire that broke out at a hand glove and jacket manufacturing company located in the Waluj industrial area near Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, post 2am on Sunday.
While a total of 13 workers were present inside the factory unit when the blaze was reported, seven managed to escape through the roof of the factory.
Police inspector with MIDC Waluj police station, Ganesh Chate said the workers hailing from north India were sleeping inside the factory and woke up after sensing heat.
“The exit door of the factory was inaccessible due to fire. The flames rapidly spread across a major portion of the factory and caused the death of six workers possibly due to suffocation and burning,” he said.
The dead bodies have been sent for post-mortem at a government hospital after identification.
Police said some of the workers managed to reach the sealing of the factory and jumped off using a nearby tree. “These workers reported minor scratches on their bodies. Their health condition is okay,” Chate said.
Around eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot which doused off the fire and took out the bodies.
Police said the factory is owned by one Saber Khan Pathan. “We are recording the statements of workers and others, following which an offence will be registered. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained,” police said.
Located around 15km from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Waluj is the major industrial hub that houses several MSMEs and large factories.
